Astellas will visit Kilcummin National School as part of the Kerry Science Festival to promote the importance of STEM subjects for future careers in the pharmaceutical industry.

The Astellas Kerry Plant, centrally situated in Killorglin just off the Ring of Kerry and the Wild Atlantic Way, was established in 1990 and currently employs over 320 employees. It formulates immunosuppressant drug products called Prograf and Advagraf, some of Astellas’ most important and innovative drugs, using the latest encapsulation, ampoule filling and packaging technology. Prograf and Advagraf are prescribed for the prevention of rejection of transplanted organs. Worldwide distribution is from the site in Killorglin.

The scientists will demonstrate an experiment to the students to give them an idea of what is involved in being a Pharmaceutical Scientist.
